The Here and Now
This short is a fantastic example of the 'Classic Realist' narrative structure and plays on it very well, taking into account shot type and editing style.
In the beginning, a woman places a poster on the glass of a bus stop and sits down - This is where we see 'Eye line Match' This is first seen when the man looks at the woman.
After taking a seat, the woman begins to cry and this is the 'Enigma' of the piece and the man sitting down signifies the 'Pathway to Resolution'
After a little bit of crying from the woman and the man shuffling up a bit we see the kink in the 'Pathway to Resolution' - this is shown when the man leans in to hug the woman in order to comfort her, and she accepts the comfort and stops crying; This is known as the 'Closure'
The sound in this piece is pretty much all ambient, There was no 'Non-Diegetic' sound in this piece.
The camera in this piece was static apart from one handheld shot. This is the classic way of film making at is very effective. There are some very long establishing shots, and close ups are used very effectively on the subjects to show facial expression and feelings.
The editing style of this shot was very clean and included many long takes; for example, in the beginning there is a good 5-6 seconds of establishing shot, and the long takes follow with close-ups of the subjects.
The audience is left in suspense in only one part of this short. The fact that you cannot see what's on the poster leaves the viewer wondering and thinking about it for hours to come (for me at least) At the end of the piece all we see is the man's face, this leaves the audience wondering.
In this piece, the man is acting at the Protagonist and the woman is the Antagonist.
After the comforting hug from the man, the woman stops crying, gets up and leaves - Thus ending the short.
Cool Unicorn Bruv
This entry is another excellent example of the 'Classic Realist' narrative structure and is very funny at the same time.
In the beginning we see a normal situation where a man is selling another man a bicycle.
We are introduced to the characters in this shot
In the next few shots, we see these characters develop and get a nice 'Shot Reverse-Shot' Sequence; This allows us to get to know the characters even more.
We are introduced to "Man 1" in this shot
The next shot introduces the 'Enigma' in to the short and we see some 'Reaction Shots' this is integral to any 'Classic Realist' Piece.
We can see the reaction shot in this piece
The final shot of the shot is a 'Re-Establishing Shot'. After the comedic end to the piece, we see the characters again, and how they have changed over this short amount of time.
This Re-Establishing shot ends the short very well
The background of this piece tells you a lot about the characters. The rough brick walls and the "Back Alley" look tells you that these characters aren't exactly accountants or lawyers.
There are a lot of reaction shots in this piece, probably due to the Unicorn - The reaction shots work very well and show everyone's view on the Unicorn without speaking. Facial expressions are very powerful in a shot with hardly any dialogue.
The cuts were very quick and conversations were snappy and the language used by the subjects allowed this point to be proven.
There was a lot of "Stereotypical Music" in this piece - Music that gives the audience an idea of who the people in it are and a quick background story. There was Diegetic sound and it was used very well.
